Why some handmade soap bars appear oily

Handmade soap is prized for its natural ingredients, skin-friendly properties, and artisanal charm. Occasionally, you may notice a thin oily layer forming on the surface of a soap bar. This phenomenon, often called "soap sweating" or "oil separation," is completely normal and reflects the natural composition of the product.

High-quality handmade soaps contain a combination of oils and butters, such as olive oil, coconut oil, or shea butter. If the balance between lye and oils leaves some free oils, these may rise to the surface over time, especially in warm or humid environments. This does not affect the soap's performance-on the contrary, it can enhance moisturization during use.

To minimize oiliness, store handmade soap in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Some gently blot the surface with a paper towel before first use, but the oils can also be incorporated directly into your washing routine.
