Developing Laundry Products for Sensitive-Skin Consumers

Meta Description:
Laundry products for sensitive-skin consumers require a careful balance between gentleness, cleaning performance and market expectations. See how Youming worked with a customer to refine a gentler laundry formula through product development and sample testing.

When "Gentle" Still Needs to Clean

A laundry product designed for sensitive-skin consumers cannot focus on mildness alone.

The customer wanted a gentler laundry solution, but the product still needed to provide the cleaning performance expected from a modern laundry product.

That created a clear development challenge: how do we make the formula gentler without making the cleaning experience feel compromised?

We started by looking at the product requirements as a whole rather than treating "gentle" as a single formula specification.

Choosing the Right Formula Direction

Ingredient selection became an important part of the development process.

We reviewed the formula direction around the customer's intended positioning, paying attention to the balance between cleansing performance and a gentler product profile.

Rather than simply removing active ingredients, we considered how the formula worked as a complete system and which components were necessary to maintain the expected washing performance.

This gave us a practical starting point for sample development.

Testing More Than Cleaning Performance

The sample needed to be evaluated from the perspective of the final product experience.

We looked at cleaning performance alongside the overall feel of the formula, fragrance direction and other details that could affect how the product would be positioned in the market.

The customer then evaluated the sample and provided feedback on the product experience.

Some adjustments were made based on that feedback, while keeping the core cleaning performance in place.

The process was not about making the mildest possible formula. It was about finding a usable balance between gentleness and effective cleaning.

Refining the Product Around the Market

A technically suitable formula still needs to make sense as a commercial product.

We therefore considered the customer's intended market positioning alongside the formula itself. A product aimed at consumers looking for a gentler laundry option needs its formulation, fragrance direction, packaging and product claims to communicate the same positioning.

This helped us avoid treating the formula as an isolated technical project.

The final product needed to feel consistent from formula to user experience to market positioning.

How We Developed the Gentler Laundry Product

1. Define the product direction - We confirmed the customer's target positioning and expectations for a gentler laundry product.

2. Review the formula - We selected a suitable formulation direction while keeping the required cleaning performance in mind.

3. Prepare the sample - We developed a working sample for the customer to evaluate in actual use.

4. Refine from feedback - We adjusted relevant formula and product details based on the customer's evaluation.

5. Confirm the final specification - Once the product balance met the agreed requirements, we finalized the formula for production.

A Formula the Customer Could Take to Market

The customer was satisfied with the final balance between a gentler product profile and effective cleaning performance.

They also appreciated our practical approach during development and the flexibility to refine the product based on their feedback.

The final formula gave the customer a clearer product direction for their target market without sacrificing the cleaning experience expected from a laundry product.
